Practice Description:

My work with clients is centered on helping the client explore the origin of his/her struggles and on developing alternative coping skills and strategies for facing life's obstacles. I see each client as an individual possessing the capacity for insight regarding his/her current difficulties. Unfortunately, this insight is often blocked by unhealthy ways of relating to others and the world. These unhealthy ways may include the use of substances, sexuality, or other behaviors used to the extreme, turning pain and fear inward in order to keep one's self hidden from others, or using ineffective communication to express one's self. In each of these situations, I work with the client or couple to develop an understanding of how past and current experiences work together to create today's reality. I enjoy working with individuals, couples, and groups and have an extensive background working with each. I believe in collaborative treatment and as such strive to include as many resources as possible, including spouses, families, and referral sources. Lastly, I have experience working with impaired healthcare providers and other professionals. I work with the Virginia Health Practitioner's Monitoring Program (HPMP) and Lawyers Helping Lawyers (LHL) to create outpatient counseling support for complex addiction and return-to-work issues faced by these professionals.
